Filing your taxes gets much faster when you arrive prepared. Here is a checklist of what most filers need to bring to their tax appointment at Holmes Financial Hub.
Identification
- Government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, or passport)
- Social Security cards or ITIN letters for you, your spouse, and any dependents
Income documents
- W-2 โ wages from an employer
- 1099-NEC โ income as an independent contractor
- 1099-MISC โ other miscellaneous income
- 1099-INT / 1099-DIV โ interest and dividend income
- 1099-R โ retirement account distributions
- 1099-G โ unemployment compensation or state tax refunds
- 1099-K โ income from payment apps or marketplaces
- K-1 โ income from partnerships, S-corporations, or trusts
Deductions and credits
- Form 1098 โ mortgage interest paid
- Form 1098-T โ tuition paid (education credit)
- Form 1098-E โ student loan interest paid
- Receipts for charitable donations
- Childcare provider name, address, and tax ID, plus total paid
- Receipts for medical and dental expenses
- Records of retirement contributions (traditional IRA, HSA)
Self-employed and business
- Profit and loss statement or income/expense totals
- Receipts for business expenses
- Vehicle mileage logs (business use)
- Home office measurements and expenses
Prior-year information
- A copy of last year's tax return (if you filed elsewhere)
- Any IRS or state tax correspondence received this year
DOT / Railroad employees
Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) forms, union dues, and any work-related expenses are treated differently than standard W-2 income. Bring your RRB-1099 and any related statements.
